The Homes for Heroes Green Infrastructure Project consists of a 3.6-acre newly constructed wetland on a historic 6-acre site. A collaboration between RKLA Studio and Brooker Engineering, the extended detention wetlands act as a water quality and quantity treatment basin for the surrounding 151-acre watershed. The site is situated between a residential neighborhood, and a freight railway / industrial area.

The site of this newly constructed wetland comes with a deep history. Once part of a 2,300-acre area known as Army Camp Shanks, it served as the largest point of embarkation of soldiers during World War II. In 2009, the remaining 14-acres held by the Federal Government were given to a not-for-profit organization that serves the homeless. Of the 14-acres, it was decided that 8-acres would be devoted to affordable housing units for veterans and their families, “Homes for Heroes”, and 6-acres would be dedicated to constructed wetlands and walking paths.

The planting design for the wetland considers the fluctuating water levels and includes a selection of native grasses, perennials, shrubs, and trees that are suited for this distinct habitat. A perimeter walking trail provides public access around the wetlands, bringing people closer to nature.
