Ocean Village
Ocean Village, a thirteen-acre low income housing development located in the Rockaways, Queens, NY, suffered severe damage during Hurricane Sandy. The property, which sits adjacent to the beach, was redeveloped with OCV Architects and L&M Development Partners.
RKLA developed a site plan for the residents of the 1,000 housing units that includes playgounds, basketball courts, new pedestrian circulation, beach access, and 3.5 Acres of new waterfront resilient plantings – including 300 New trees. The selected plants are primarily native, salt-tolerant, and resilient to both wind and sea-spray. The existing heavily concrete landscape was demolished in favor of a more natural combination of materials, and most of the active space on the site is located near the beach, to encourage residents to take advantage of the adjacent boardwalk and beach.
