Stony Brook University
Working with Mitchell Giurgola Architects, RKLA designed the landscape for the New Computer Science Building on the campus of SUNY Stony Brook in conjunction with the NY State University Construction Fund.
Sited on a heavily wooded 2.85 acres of campus, the landscape plan focused on the preservation of the existing tree canopy wherever possible while creating functional student gathering spaces and supporting pedestrian circulation. The programmed spaces include an entry plaza with a shaded seating area and a large student courtyard with permeable paving and curved seatwall.
A plant palette of understory trees and shrubs were planted among the existing mature trees. Plants were selected for their adaptability to the sandy woodland conditions on the site.
