West 11th Street Townhouse

For this garden, RKLA Studio strived to create a beautiful, traditional West Village back garden for our client. Starting with the existing bi-level garden and a large, well-established London Plane Tree that we wanted to preserve, RKLA worked to improve the flow of the garden and create a graceful, peaceful space. The newly installed wall in the back of the garden was added to convey a sense of age and give a feeling of enclosure to the garden. The wall was designed to bridge the roots of the mature tree and built with brick to match the existing lower garden walls. The intricate fence pattern on the sides of the garden adds a classical element.

The bluestone paving at the lower level was installed in a herringbone pattern, bridging the formality between the interior and the exterior. The bluestone paving at the upper level features large joints that allow plants to come up in between.
